Just a rant from a tired PM.

Too many times have I seen organizations try to manage projects with sticky notes and complex Excel worksheets. They try to recreate the making of bread and sell it to us as if we just discovered Wonder. The process of project management has existed and been refined since the space race to the moon. From PERT charts and flow diagrams to the evolution of project management software, I have honed my career on a tool from the beginning and am strongly in the Microsoft Project camp. Too many times have IT departments sent out tools without training and expected end users to just figure it out. It is this practice that enables the mantra of “Project is too complicated or complex.”

Complex? Yes, because it is needed to handle all business types and scenarios.

Complicated? No, because you are the one that decides what you want to manage and how. Put that same magnification on the complex over bloated excel file that you think will manage the trifecta of Resources over time, scope and cost. No view on capacity and no history of performance.

Try that with sticky notes on a window, and on that hot summer day, someone decides that it is too hot in here. When the window is opened, where does your plan go? I know you all think, “I know Excel, so I can manage it,” but have you ever heard of the expression “the right tool for the job”

Trained PM’s know the difference between pushing the broom and living the dream.
